Troop 152’s North Woods Canoe Trip

August 2–7 • North Trout Lake • Vilas County, WI

Beneath the dense canopy and across the glass-like waters of Vilas County, Troop 152 pushed their limits on an epic five-day canoe trek through North Trout Lake that we won’t soon forget. With 21 participants (8 adults and 13 youth), we paddled, portaged, climbed, cooked, laughed, and explored a true Northwoods wilderness experience.

22.7 Miles of Adventure

Over the week, the scouts canoed 22.7 miles across lakes, winding channels, and bogs. The scenery was incredible — towering pines and wildlife all around us.

Beaver Dams: From Small Bumps to a Giant Wall

Our route took us over several small beaver dams, each a fun challenge that required teamwork and balance. But the highlight came when we encountered a massive 8‑foot beaver dam — a true natural engineering marvel. Scouts worked together to safely climb, lift, and guide the canoes over the structure, cheering as each boat made it across.

Three Portages — And Every One Earned

We completed three portages, hauling canoes and gear through rugged terrain. In these moments, Scouts showed grit, leadership, and determination — the kind of challenges that build confidence and character.

Thunderstorm on Tuesday morning

One morning brought a fast‑moving Northwoods thunderstorm, reminding us that adventure doesn’t always come with blue skies. Scouts secured camp, stayed calm, and hunkered down until the storm passed — a textbook example of preparedness and teamwork.

Mosquitoes That Could Carry You Away

Let’s be honest: the mosquitoes were absolutely brutal . The kind that makes you swat, sprint, and question your life choices. But Troop 152 handled them with bug spray and the classic Scout attitude — “It’s all part of the adventure.”

Great Food, Great Friends, Great Memories

From campfire meals to lakeside lunches, our crews ate well and worked together to prepare hearty food each day, including many, many, PB&J on tortillas. Evenings were filled with stories, laughter, card games, and the kind of memories that last a lifetime.

More Adventure Than We Knew What To Do With

This trip had everything:

• Real wilderness challenges
• Teamwork and leadership
• Skill‑building moments
• Incredible scenery
• And more adventure than we ever expected

Our Scouts pushed themselves, supported each other, and came home stronger, more confident, and proud of what they accomplished.
