Merit badges are a staple of scouting. Merit badges provide opportunities to learn in depth about many things. A merit badge with a silver colored border signifies that the merit badge is an Eagle Scout required merit badge. By the time you achieve the rank of Eagle Scout you will have earned at least 21 total merit badges with 13 of them being Eagle Scout required merit badges. 6 merit badges are required for Star Scout. 4 of which are to be Eagle Scout required merit badges.

5 additional merit badges are required for Life Scout. 3 of which are to be Eagle Scout required merit badges. At this point you will have at least 11 merit badges and at least 7 Eagle Scout required merit badges.

10 additional merit badges are required for Eagle Scout. 6 of which are to be Eagle Scout required merit badges. At this point you will have at least 21 merit badges and at least 13 Eagle Scout required merit badges.
